The Eastern European experience is both a playground and a battlefield for the evolution of law. Countries with clashing worldviews and differing ideas of law have shaped the region’s narrative. Marked by invasions, foreign impositions, and erasure, the region has continuously reinvented itself. Yet, the legal and state-building experiments here—promising or disastrous—have often been given only brief windows of opportunity, moments to shine or wreak havoc. If the UK’s legal tradition is a novel, Eastern Europe’s is a collection of short stories. Eastern Europe’s often fragmented and fleeting legal traditions offer concentrated moments of transformation.
